The Artist

I was born in Superior, Wisconsin in 1948. I live with my wife, Barbara, son, Elliott, and daughter, Celeste, in Racine, Wisconsin. I also have a son, Andy, who lives with his family in Waukesha, WI, and a daughter, Kate Nelson, who lives with her husband in West Allis, WI. My mother, Carol, and two sisters still live in or near Superior.

After a stint in the service ending in 1972, I moved to Milwaukee to find work. While there, I developed an interest in printmaking. I collected prints for a while and began making them in 1986. Having received no training in art, I depend on my natural abilities - and a lot of hard work - to create my successful block prints. In 1992 I left a job in management to make art full time, and I have made a living at it since then. I travel to juried art fairs throughout the country to sell the work directly to the collector.

The Work

My block prints are snapshots of experiences that help define me. From a single object to a small scene, they help me remember the past so I can try to understand it and improve my future. The relatively slow process of making the block print allows time to think about what the image means. Talking to the viewer about the work helps reveal more layers of understanding. Although my work is usually autobiographical, it is also intended to cause the viewer to recall his own memories and extract his own meanings. Most of the work is untitled for that reason.
